Your ultimate eco-friendly competition guide for World Environment Day

In case you didn’t know, today is World Environment Day (WED). Over the years, WED has become an amazing way to raise awareness for environmental issues that we all face, ranging from littering, air pollution, illegal wildlife trade and more. This year’s theme involves the reduced usage of single-use plastics, which I’m sure we’re all guilty of in some capacity. However, we have some great tips, along with some free, eco-friendly competitions, to help ease your conscience and do your part to help the planet!

Switch to eco-friendly bedding

Whilst it might not seem like an obvious choice to make, it is one that can make all the difference. The bedding industry is heavily reliant on the use of cotton, and cotton production emits a staggering quantity of greenhouse gases, alongside the use of harmful pesticides in the farming process that taints thousands of litres of clean water.

Therefore, switching to something a little eco-friendlier might be a good idea. For example, you could grab yourself an ethical bedding bundle from Ethical Bedding over on our House Beautiful site. Ethical Bedding is taking planet-positive steps to a better world, using 95% less water than traditional cotton with zero herbicides, pesticides or toxic chemicals. Now make the switch and get some planet-positive rest.

Buying refurbished tech

I know what you’re thinking: why would I buy someone else’s old tech and gadgets when I could just buy something brand new?

Technological waste, or e-waste as the kids call it, is a growing issue in the digital age, with current trend reports showing that the amount of e-waste generated worldwide will be over 65 million tons by 2030. To put it mildly, that is a lot.

Buying refurbished tech is better for the planet and your bank account, meaning that you do your part to help the environment and save money at the same time! No-brainer, right? Well, it’s even more of a no-brainer to enter our free competition to win a Grade A X2 Apple MacBook Pro from planet-conscious tech retailer tier1. That keeps the tech away from the landfill site, and your money safe in your wallet!

Cut down on single-use plastic

We’re all guilty of using too much plastic. Whether it is bulk buying bottled water, buying a shopping bag every time we go to the supermarket or always popping a plastic straw in our drink.

When it comes to plastic bottles for example, humans use about 1.2 million plastic bottles every minute, and roughly half of the plastic we produce is destined to be used for a single-use product, meaning that it won’t be recycled and will instead slowly degrade to contaminate our soil and our oceans.

That is why we all need to do our part! A good place to start might be our competition to win yourself a refillable washing up liquid bundle from Greenscents. Their reusable 500ml amber glass bottles can be refilled endlessly from the 5 litre and 20 litre containers, which in turn can be sent back to Greenscents to be cleaned and refilled for free! Just think of all the turtles you’re saving whilst you’re washing the pots after dinner.

Reduce your food waste

Speaking of dinner, let’s talk food waste. Did you know that 2.5 billion tonnes of food is thrown away each year, and a large majority of that food is still perfectly edible? As well as this, up to 40% of food headed for the supermarket is discarded as it does not meet cosmetic standards. While supermarkets are working to change this, it is still an issue that is far too common.

With this in mind, have a look at our next competition to win a £50 voucher for Earth & Wheat – the sustainable grocery subscription box. The food-waste-fighting brand is on a mission to reduce food waste by rescuing items – such as ‘wonky bread’ and ‘wonky veg’ – which would have otherwise been thrown out due to their odd shape, size or simply because of overproduction.

When it comes to the food you buy, size and shape shouldn’t matter…

Use energy-efficient appliances in your home

Do you ever fill the kettle up all the way to the top when you’re making yourself a cuppa, only to leave the rest of the water to go cold before boiling it again in a few hours?  Many people overfill the kettle when making just one drink, and half a kettle can take around two minutes to boil, costing twice as much.

With our competition to win yourself an innovative LAICA Dual Flo Kettle, you can make your tea brewing friendly to the planet and to your wallet. With efficient 2-in-1 functionality, Dual Flo is the only kettle with true one-cup dispense – meaning you only boil the water you need. Plus, it’s a free competition, so why not right?  You can head to our Woman’s Own magazine site to enter right now!

It’s either that, or maybe don’t fill the kettle all the way up when you make a brew.

Create some eco-friendly reading habits

Despite what you may think, magazines are still as popular as ever!

Statistics for 2022 show there were 700 million print magazines in circulation in 2022 across the UK! However, trends show that up to that two thirds of readers believe that it is important to have climate friendly reading habits. If only there was a free competition somewhere for a subscription to an amazing online reading service…

With our competition, you could grab yourself a subscription to the Readly app. Readly, which has over 7000 digital magazines and newspapers on its platform, will inspire hobbies (whatever they may be), keep readers informed and updated on news and trends, all whilst being a great sustainable reading choice. Go ahead and start entering today on our Celebs Now site.

World Environment Day is a great reminder to us all to make more eco-friendly changes in our lives to help preserve our beloved planet. It provides a platform for communities, companies and like-minded individuals to come together and share great tips and ideas, just as we have hoped to do in this post!

However, it is important to remember that our efforts to save the planet should not be limited to one specific day and should instead be standard practice all year round. In fact, we often have a wide variety of eco-conscious competitions running all year round. If you’d like to stay up to date with our competition sites, click here.
